Political Q: In your opinion, should President Obama support gay marriage if he wants to be reelected?

UPDATE Wednesday, May 9, 2012
Tuesday, May 8, 2012 The national debate over gay marriage is back in the spotlight, this time as North Carolina moves closer to banning marriage between same-sex couples.

Beyond North Carolina, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Meet The Press this weekend that he is comfortable with same-sex couples having equal rights as heterosexual couples.

"I am vice president of the United States of America. The president sets the policy. I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men and women are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties," Biden said on Meet The Press on Sunday.

Now Americans want to know what President Obama's stance on same-sex marriage is, however, the White House has little more than dodged providing a straight answer about where the president would throw his support.

So we asked readers: "In your opinion, should President Obama support gay marriage if he wants to be re-elected?"

Here are a few answers we received.

Mike Greco Yes. It goes along with the Democratic party's philosophy. There are a lot of gays and gay activists that aren't happy with him that he hasn't openly supported gay marriage. If he does so before the election, it won't pacify everyone, but it would be a good first step. I don't think he'd lose many votes by supporting it, but I think he'd lose more by NOT supporting it.

Sandy Holloway Brodsky Absolutely. If two responsible consenting adults are willing to commit themselves, financially and emotionally, to support each other for the rest of their lives and live together as a family unit, shouldn't we support that?? It should make no difference whether thosee two people are a man and a woman, a man and a man or a woman or a woman.

Ethel Arauz GOP isn't giving gay community anything yet they have the nerve to try to use to their advantage that Obama hasn't done enough! Hypocrisy at its best. Name a US president that has done more for the gay community. Let's be careful & not cut off our noses to spite our face.
